Before you enroll

Questions from parents.

Who can apply to TAMS?

Applicants must have been Texas residents (based on a parent or court-appointed legal guardian) for 12 consecutive months at the time of application. UNT's Office of Undergraduate Admissions, not TAMS, decides residency. Applicants are enrolled in an accredited or state-approved high school program in grade 9, 10 or 11. Applicants must have completed Algebra I and be enrolled in or have completed Geometry and Algebra II at the time of application.

Is there a minimum SAT or ACT score?

TAMS needs an SAT or ACT score. An ACT must include the Science section, and TAMS will not consider an ACT score without a Science sub-score. The essay or writing portion is not required. TAMS does not accept PSAT, Duke TIP or Baylor TIP scores. A test score is one of more than twenty variables TAMS considers, so it is never the only factor.

Does my student have to live on campus?

TAMS is a residential program, so every student lives in the McConnell Hall residence hall on the UNT campus. Commuting is not an option.

What does it cost?

TAMS estimates the 2026-2027 yearly cost at $28,438 before any scholarship. That covers $14,000 for tuition and related fees, $11,838 for housing and dining, a $2,500 TAMS program charge and a $100 student activities charge. These are estimates, and UNT can change them each year. The TAMS program charge is $2,500 a year, stays the same for both years, is non-refundable and is due in full in the fall semester. UNT can raise tuition, fees and housing and meal plan costs each year. The TAMS scholarship amount is fixed for a student for the two years of the program.

Is there financial help?

Every TAMS student receives the TAMS Student Scholarship, $9,000 for the academic year. A Mid-Class Scholarship of $5,000 is available to students with a Student Aid Index of 40,000 or less, and a Supplemental Scholarship can cover remaining need. All are based on the FAFSA or TASFA. Incoming families should file the FAFSA or TASFA before May 31, 2027. Named scholarship applications open May 11, 2027 and close May 31, 2027.

How many students are accepted?

TAMS says 400 to 500 students apply each year, it interviews about 300 to 350 of them, and it aims to admit 185 to 200 students.

When do families hear back?

TAMS tells applicants their status about three weeks after the interview stage, either an offer of admission or a place on the waitlist. Waitlisted applicants remain viable candidates and TAMS keeps the waitlist through June. TAMS has not published decision dates.

Who writes the teacher evaluations?

TAMS asks for four teacher evaluations, all from teachers the student has this 2026-2027 school year: English, math, science (a biology, chemistry or physics teacher) and a fourth teacher. TAMS contacts the teachers on your behalf. Submit only one request form, and only after the student has a report card, not a progress report, for the current year.

Is TAMSPrep affiliated with TAMS?

No. TAMSPrep by EduAvenues is an independent service, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science. Check every requirement and date on the school's own website before you apply.
